Teams of inspectors will be making visits to check health and safety standards at businesses in Witham this week.
The visits, which will take place tomorrow, are in the wake of a health and safety commission report, which sets targets for reducing accidents and ill health in Britain's workplaces.
They will also identify areas of risk which need priority treatment.
Inspectors will be paying particular attention to preventing accidents involving workplace transport and falls from heights, the biggest killers in the workplace.
They will also be looking at control of noise, occupational asthma, hand-arm vibration, slips, trips and musculoskeletal disorders.
Peter Buckle, divisional director for HSE's field operations directorate in the east and south-east, said: "I would advise all businesses in Witham to assess their health and safety standards, not just for the risks we are targeting, but also for all their activities."
