Police today appealed for witnesses after a 31-year-old old man was attacked in Colchester.
He was left with a broken ankle, broken ribs and a bruised face.
The victim was taken to hospital and needed stitches after the assault by four men, which police said happened in St Botolph's Street, near the roundabout.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester CID, said: "We'd like anyone who witnessed this attack to come forward.
"Four men have been arrested and interviewed but we'd like some independent witnesses if possible."
Anyone with information about the attack, which happened at about 2.15am on Saturday, should call Colchester police on 01206 762212.
