Residents packed the public gallery at the town hall for a meeting about gipsies in Colchester but were told they would have to wait to air their views.
Colchester Council arranged last night's meeting after concerns from many people in the borough at the number of travellers camping out on sites in the town, particularly the recent encampment at Hilly Fields and the current one at Stanway.
The public gallery at the council's cabinet meeting last night was packed with about 40 members of the public expecting to hear and take part in a discussion about travellers camping at Hilly Fields.
But cabinet leader Colin Sykes told the expectant crowd a full discussion of the matter was not scheduled until the cabinet meeting on September 30.
Colchester residents wishing to air their opinions on the controversial subject will be able to speak out then.
He promised that at the cabinet's next meeting the traveller issue would be the first item on the agenda and said he would try and let as many members of the public take part as possible.
He said: "As far as I can, I will endeavour to allow as many of you as possible to participate."
