A four-year-old boy was taken to hospital after suffering burns at a barbecue.
Two fire crews rushed to a house in Orchard Road, Maldon, when petrol or lighter fluid that had been spilled on the child's leg caught alight.
When the fuel had burnt itself out the flames quickly died down but the victim, who was wearing shorts, sustained moderate burns.
Firefighters worked to keep the damaged skin cool before an ambulance arrived to take the boy to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.
