Green Castle Point councillors today begged residents to make a stand against plans for massive developments which threaten to engulf areas of natural beauty.

Council leader Dave Wells has warned that Canvey, Benfleet, Thundersley and Hadleigh could follow in the footsteps of the east end of London unless residents are on their guard.

He said: "People are talking about the Thames Gateway and building a bridge linking Canvey and Kent. But do people realise what this will do to the borough?

"We are talking about massive development in the area and unless people start doing something now it will be too late. There is no point in protesting about the new A130 once it has been turned into a motorway, people need to speak out now."
