Kevin Maher believes it is vital that Southend United seal their first Third Division win of the new season tomorrow against Shrewsbury Town at Roots Hall.

Blues' midfield skipper admitted to feeling completely dejected after Tuesday night's 1-0 home defeat against Carlisle.

But the 25-year-old said he was determined to put a smile back on the fans' faces by driving the Shrimpers towards three points against the Shrews.

"After opening our season with a 2-2 draw at Hull City all the boys were on a high, but the Carlisle defeat soon brought us crashing down to earth," said Maher.

"We created plenty of chances against Carlisle, despite never playing brilliantly, but the ball wouldn't go in for us. It was just one of those games.

"If we had got an early goal against Carlisle then I'm sure we could have gone on to get four or five. But it wasn't to be and we need to put the record straight against Shrewsbury.

"It's only early days yet - but we need to get into the winning habit."

Blues boss Rob Newman would not name his line-up, but hinted that striker Tes Bramble could be handed his first start of the season.
