The public should not rely solely on police to deal with travellers who may trespass and leave rubbish in their wake, Thurrock's divisional commander Chief Supt Terry Sheern has warned.
Police will not hesitate to use their powers where appropriate in removing illegal camps, he said.
But resources are limited and officers' priorities have to be directed at crimes like burglary, vehicle crimes and violence, he added.
