Commonwealth Games gold medallist James Gibson is to be invited to a reception hosted by the Mayor of Witham.
Mr Gibson, 22, who grew up in Witham and whose parents still live in the town, won a gold medal in the 50m breaststroke and a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke swimming events at the recent games in Manchester.
On Monday, at the council's policy and resources committee the council's first meeting since the medal win, Witham mayor Keiron Boylan announced he was extending an invitation to James Gibson to attend the mayor's annual end-of-year reception as a special guest.
Mr Boylan said: "We understand that James Gibson's competition and university commitments mean that he is unlikely to visit Witham before December and I will, therefore, be inviting him to be the guest of honour at the Mayor's Christmas Reception."
