Southend taxpayers were today warned to brace themselves for a £250 rise in council tax next year.
The fears have been prompted by a Government move to change the way grants are calculated which would benefit councils in northern England.
Southend Council leader Charles Latham said: "We are talking about an increase of £5 a week."
