Students who gave up time to attend a summer school have reaped the rewards.
Ray Howard, a Canvey councillor, and Castle Point MP Bob Spink presented awards to pupils of Castle View School, Canvey, who took part in the fifth annual literacy course.
The two-week summer school, which boosts the reading and writing skills of pupils leaving primary education for Castle View School in September, attracted 30 pupils.
Twenty-one older students also took part, gaining their Trident Community Involvement award by working during the two weeks as paired readers, providing the younger pupils with support.
