A private company has been hired to clear asbestos from a village playing field following an invasion by travellers.

The discovery was made after travellers were evicted from Thorpe playing field for the second year running.

Notices have been put up to ensure that people stay away from the material until it is removed.

Les Ellis, treasurer of the playing field trust, said the villagers will be left to pick up the bill for the clean-up operation.

"Last year, the cost was about £2,000 and we have no idea what the final bill will be this time around," he said.
