Colchester United go into tonight's mouth-watering away trip to Tranmere boosted by triallist defender Pat Baldwin agreeing to sign.

The former Chelsea youngster, who also figured in the pre-season trial game for Luton, handed U's boss Steve Whitton the good news yesterday afternoon.

But former Bohemians left-sided midfielder-cum-defender, Trinidad international Avery John, has returned to Ireland until his work permit is sorted out.

Whitton said: "I really do hope it's sorted in time for the lad to be available at Crewe on Saturday."

It is said that all is not well at Prenton Park where annual FA Cup giant-killers Tranmere Rovers have just embarked on the new Second Division season minus both a manager and chairman.

Yet, as they prepare for tonight's home game with Colchester United, Rovers sit happily at the top-of-the-table after thumping Port Vale 4-1 at Vale Park on Saturday.

That result alone has done wonders for caretaker boss Ray Matthias.

Matthias has been allowed to bring in former Northampton keeper Keith Welch on a one-month contract as cover for Dutch born John Achterberg who missed the Port Vale triumph because of a long-standing ankle injury.

Victory over the U's, who incidentally took four points off Rovers last season, would give Matthias a head start over the other names in the frame for the manager's job, such as Brian Flynn, Steve Coppell, Peter Taylor and Ronnie Moore.
