A Walton church may close due to difficulties in maintaining it
The only Roman Catholic church in the town, St Francis of Assisi, may shut its doors due to rising expenses, increasing Health and Safety regulations and overall maintenance difficulties.
Instead, the one mass a week celebrated in the church will be transferred to the The Sacred Heart in Connaught Avenue, Frinton.
Monsignor David Donnelly said: "Everyone has been very understanding and co-operative but it is sad to lose what has been a very happy centre for so long."
A majority of people who go to the 8.30am mass at Walton are Frinton residents who are attracted to the early service.
The final decision over the church will be made by the Diocesan Finance Board in Brentwood in September but otherwise the closure will take effect from December 1.
