A man managed to save himself from robbers by picking up a bottle in the street to defend himself.
The 34-year-old was walking along Lancaster Gardens, Southend, close to a railway bridge when he heard the sound of three men behind him.
Although he started to speed up his walking pace, he then heard one of the group demand that he hand over money.
The victim felt concerned for his safety and picked up a bottle on the ground and hit one of the men who was following him before they left him alone.
Each of the group was wearing a baseball cap pulled down over their faces, and jackets pulled up to cover their mouths.
The attempted robbery took place around 10pm on Friday.
