Billericay businesses and individuals are being invited to support a project to preserve the town's heritage for future generations.

The Cater Museum in the High Street has launched the 'Maintain a Memory' scheme to enable specialist preservation and restoration work to be carried out on artefacts of significant local importance.

Curator Christine Brewster has chosen a selection of items to launch the scheme including a pair of shoes thought to be between 200 and 300-years-old.

"These were found walled up in a local building but why, we don't really know," she said.

Other items in need of professional restoration include samplers created by local girls to demonstrate their sewing skills in bygone days.

Christine explained: "The project is a little bit like the 'Adopt an Animal' scheme run by zoos. But here, we are talking about maintenance and conservation."

Over the next few weeks, work will continue on getting the museum garden in shape for its official opening to visitors towards the end of September.

The garden project will need some voluntary help to keep it in good shape and anyone interested is asked to contact the museum on 01277 622023.
