East Bergholt High School's swimming pool is facing closure.
Now all the parish councils within the school's catchment area are each being asked to pay £500 a year for the next three years towards the upkeep of the pool, which opens for public use.
But Brantham councillors, at their meeting on Thursday decided against making any contribution.
Chairman Jim King said residents already paid for the pool in the grounds of the Heath Road School through council tax and were charged if they used the pool during public open times.
In a letter to the council, the chairman of the sports centre management committee explained that to meet health and safety standards, a substantial amount of repairs and maintenance needed to be carried out.
