A driver was hit in the face by a piece of concrete that smashed through his windscreen, causing eight-mile tailbacks on the A12

The man, alone in his car at the time, was driving along the Kelvedon bypass on the Colchester-bound carriageway when the incident happened

The A12 was closed for three hours while emergency services treated the victim and the road surface was examined.

The man, from Peterborough, was taken to Colchester General Hospital by Essex Air Ambulance with face and head injuries. They were not thought to be serious.

Traffic was diverted through Kelvedon as drivers were advised to avoid the A12 and find alternative routes.

Tailbacks reached Boreham, near Chelmsford, eight miles away.
