A man was today starting four months behind bars after admitting driving while disqualified.

Christopher Farrell, 19, of Newington Avenue, Southend, also pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and failing to surrender to custody.

Southend magistrates heard how Farrell was stopped by police who discovered he was driving despite having been disqualified by the court and had no insurance.

Lee Wilcoxson, mitigating, said: "Mr Farrell bought the motor vehicle and was driving it home to park it off the road so he could work on it and make it roadworthy.

"His explanation for having no insurance is very similar and he pleaded guilty to both at the first opportunity."

He added Farrell had missed two opportunities to comply with the preparation of probation reports and had not turned up at court because he was worried he would be sent to prison.

Chairman of the magistrates bench Linda Young sentenced Farrell to a total of four months in custody and disqualified him from driving for six months.
