A proposed multi-million pound shop and flats complex would be a fine finish to a town centre's modernisation, a council leader said.
Plans have been submitted to Chelmsford Borough Council for the big development in South Woodham Ferrers.
Developers South Woodham Investments want permission to build five shops and 39 flats, with a car park, on land in Market Square.
The design will be by Ipswich-based architects Roy Grimwade.
Ian Roberts, leader of South Woodham Ferrers Town Council, welcomed the application as a fitting way to finish the redevelopment of the town centre.
However, he said councillors would have liked to see office space created along with the flats.
He added: "The council has put some comments to the application with regard to the provisions for parking and the number of flats, but generally the plans look quite nice."
