Essex Police were today beginning to hand out on-the-spot fines to law breakers as part of the Government's drive to curb anti-social behaviour.
The force is one of four across the country taking part in the pilot scheme which aims to halt the rise in petty crime.
Criminals will face fines of £40 or £80 during the year-long trial and will be given a ticket on the spot when caught in the act.
But fines are not to be paid straightaway - officers are not allowed to decide if the person is guilty or not.
If the offender accepts the fine it must be paid in 21 days or they will go to court.
Supt Carl O'Malley, of the community safety team at Essex Police, said: "We believe that this is a real opportunity for reducing bureaucracy, which in turn will free up officers' time.
"Communities should see more of their police, and that can only be welcomed."
