A service station assistant was held captive as two robbers stole cash and phone cards from the store.
The robbers struck at about 1am on Sunday at the Q8 Tendring Park service station, on Colchester Road, Weeley.
A spokesman for Essex Police said Jim Glover, the 63-year-old male shop assistant, was held by one of the raiders while a small amount of cash and phone cards were stolen from the service station shop.
The spokesman said: "The victim was not injured during the attack."
One of the raiders is described as aged about 18, 5ft 6ins tall with short dark hair and was wearing a yellow baseball cap. He also had a green jacket and a pair of loose-fitting trousers.
The other is described as in his early 20s and about 5ft 8ins tall. He is also described as having noticeably fair eye brows and eye lashes and blue eyes.
He was wearing a white baseball cap and a grey jacket.
