A fresh crackdown on drinkers causing trouble in Colchester town centre could be in the pipeline.
No-drinking zones, staggered club licences and better training for doormen could be on the cards to prevent fights sparking off in Queen Street and St Botolph's Street.
The decision to implement these measures lies in the hands of police chiefs and Colchester Council.
Speaking to members of Colchester Council's Quality of Life Panel last night, Sgt David Richards said Colchester is a safe place to live but Queen Street and St Botolph's Street are "flash-points".
He said large numbers of people congregate here to get takeaway food and taxis after the pubs kickout.
The panel meet to discuss ways of improving the quality of life for Colchester residents and had sought police advice on making the town centre a safer place.
Colchester Police Licensing Officer Mick Aitchison said: "Staggered entertainment licences allows more natural dispersal."
Mr Aitchison suggested the introduction of no-drinking areas in the town.
