Come and join the fun but don't spoil the party! That's the plea from Clacton Carnival organisers who are making their last-minute preparations for this weekend's spectacular procession.

The committee running the event has become increasingly concerned for the safety of those taking part, both on the floats and walking alongside.

A number of people have been hit by coins thrown by spectators.

And in a bid to reduce the likelihood of injury, buckets and containers have been banned on the floats.

"Everyone wants to enjoy themselves and we are not out to stop that," said Alan Wiggins, chairman of Clacton Carnival.

"But at the very top of the list has to be the safety and protection of those involved who are doing their best to raise a great deal of money for charity."

Mr Wiggins said organisers had done everything possible to encourage those turning out to put money in the collection boxes carried by those walking close to the crowd rather than throwing the coins.
