Brentwood fire services are urging residents to check their smoke alarms are in full working order after having to rescue a 40-year-old man from a smoke filled bungalow in Four Oaks off Ingrave Road.
Sub Officer Bernie Musto said fire crews were called to the house at around 9pm on Sunday March 17 only after neighbours noticed smoke coming out of the building
It is believed the occupier, who needed hospital treatment following the fire, had left a pan on the oven and then fallen to sleep.
As a result fire officers had to break-in to the house to rescue the man - who was found unconscious beside the front door.
Sub Officer Musto said: "Once again this highlights the importance of working smoke detectors. Although smoke detectors were fitted in the house there were no batteries in them.
"We need to get the message across to people the dangers of not having fully operating smoke detectors. In this case it could have cost a life."
