A bid to get Braintree into the spirit of the Queen's Golden Jubilee has been snubbed.
Councillors have turned down a request for £1,000 to pay for bunting to decorate the town centre.
Braintree Town Centre Strategy Group put in the bid which was considered at the Braintree Area Forum last night
It was proposed it would come from the budget for 2002-2003, which is £10,000 in total.
It was even thought the display might stay up for the World Cup.
A spokesman for Braintree Council today said it was unlikely there were any other avenues of funding available for bunting from the council.
But other members had concerns last night, including Nigel Edey who said there was a need for bunting in lots of villages and parishes.
Councillor David Mann said: "Many of us would support the £1,000 for bunting if we didn't have to make a premature decision."
