North and mid-Essex commuters faced rail chaos today - and a train company put the blame on the collapse of Railtrack.
Stranded - commuters stare vainly at information screens at Colchester North station today
Passengers were left stranded at stations on the Colchester to London Liverpool Street line - including Chelmsford, Witham, and Ingatestone - after a signals failure between Gidea Park and Chadwell Heath.
First Great Eastern was advising passengers not to travel by rail at all today. A spokeswoman said all their trains had been affected, and were running an average of 88 minutes late.
She said it was the fault of Railtrack, which is being wound up by the Government.
"This is indicative of the problems we have to put up with now the infrastructure of the system is in such a muddle," she added.
