Southend police and lifeboat crews were called out on Friday after it was feared a man might jump off the town's pier.
A passerby who saw the man alerted officers and the Southend lifeboat crews - who managed to persuade the man not to jump.
He is believed to have suffered from a mental illness and is now being treated in hospital. A police spokesman said: "We think he was there for about two hours before officers arrived."
