Southend United finally achieved back-to-back League victories for the first time in 15 long months with an impressive 2-0 Roots Hall win over high-flying Scunthorpe on Saturday.

Goals from Blues defender Leon Cort and player-manager Rob Newman put the brakes on the fourth-placed Iron, who still harbour genuine hopes of clinching an automatic Third Division promotion berth.

This was the first time since December 2000, following last week's 1-0 success at Lincoln City, that Southend have strung together two League wins in a row.

And it was another patched up Shrimpers outfit which went about putting to the sword a Scunthorpe side who are pretty much dead certs for the play-offs.

Blues boss Newman, whose team are now 12th in the table, has a physio room packed full of injured players and was left to battle on with another bare bones XI.

But the 38-year-old veteran, making his 821st League and cup appearance as an emergency striker, led from the front and inspired his troops to a three-point bonus which rarely looked in doubt.
