Colchester's first out-of-town security camera system will be set up on the town's biggest housing estate.
Until now, CCTV cameras have only been used within the town centre boundaries for both privacy and technical reasons.
But five new colour CCTV cameras, which switch to infra-red for night-time filming, are set to be installed on the Greenstead estate to cut down on crime and make people feel safer.
The cameras, which will be up and running in May, will transmit images to a special recording station, which can be accessed at any time of day or night by the police.
They will only be stationed over commercial and public areas in the Greenstead estate.
Government funding worth thousands of pounds over a three-year period will be used to fund the project.
