A teacher has quit his Benfleet school by mutual agreement despite being cleared of assault on a pupil, it has been revealed.
Philip Campbell was a teacher at the Appleton School in Croft Road, Benfleet, when he was accused of hitting a 13-year-old boy on the back of the head.
The 48-year-old, of Bishop's Close, Basildon, denied the charge of assault by beating, but was convicted at Southend Magistrates' Court in September and fined £750. He was also ordered to pay £50 in costs.
His conviction has now been overturned on appeal at Chelmsford Crown Court.
Today, headteacher Guy Naylor said that despite being cleared Mr Campbell would not be returning to the school.
Mr Campbell had been suspended from school ever since the alleged assault on April 2 last year and Mr Naylor said so much time had lapsed that it would be difficult for the teacher to return.
Mr Campbell refused to comment on the matter.
