Thurrock's top Tory has announced her group will be opposing plans to develop the Shell Haven site into a major container port.
Coun Anne Cheale - who represents the Corringham and Fobbing ward - made the announcement in a letter to the Thurrock Gazette
Mrs Cheale wrote: "While the Tories do not oppose development of the site for commercial purposes, the notion of it accommodating a port on such a scale as planned is not perceived as viable."
P&O and Shell have applied to Thurrock Council and the Government for permission to develop the former refinery site into a billion-pound container-port and industrial park complex.
