The driver, who had not been named this morning, was travelling towards London in a burgundy Ford Fiesta when she was involved in a collision with a recovery truck about 200 metres from the turning on to the Pitsea flyover.
The car spun around, colliding with a black Ford Focus, before coming to rest in the central reservation area.
Emergency services were scrambled to the scene at around 7.15pm yesterday and fire officers from Basildon and Leigh fire stations battled for 40 minutes to free the woman from her car.
The woman was taken to Basildon hospital but died later. A couple who had been travelling in the Ford Focus were also taken to hospital along with their two-year-old boy, suffering from shock, but they were otherwise unhurt.
