Southend United's reserves took on Luton Town at home today in the Avon Insurance Combination League, kick-off 2pm.
Aston Villa striker Andrew Marfell and Southampton hitman Adam Wallace were pencilled in to line-up for the Seasiders.
And young Millwall midfielder Rio Alderton and released Leyton Orient right-back Chris Dorrian, 19, should also have been given a run-out in Blues' second-string against the Hatters. However, trialist Torquay defender, Robert Smith, has been allowed to leave Roots Hall.
Rob Newman also confirmed today that he had been unsuccessful in his attempts to capture a loan striker.
The Southend chief returned to Premiership strugglers Derby County to try and sign 20-year-old Ian Evatt for a second time.
But the Rams forward turned down the move again and Newman said: "Ian is involved with the first team squad at Pride Park at the moment and wants to try and force his way into the team."
