Swimmers are beginning a sponsored event at Basildon's Gloucester Park swimming pool to raise money for the MacMillan Cancer Relief Fund.
Participants will try to swim 5000 metres, the equivalent of about 200 lengths of the pool.
Swimathon is the world's largest fundraising swim marathon and is taking place in 500 pools around the country.
The event has already begun but it is not too late to join the other swimmers poolside, at Gloucester Park, as the event runs until Sunday.
Anyone who wants further information about the event can call Helen Holder on 01268 471713.
