A robber threatened a newsagent with a knife to get cash.
David Corken, 53, who owns Newstrend in Colchester Road, Ardleigh, had opened the cash drawer to put money in it. But when he turned his back a man tried to snatch some money.
Det Sgt Barry Blackman said Mr Corken wrestled with the man, pinning him to the till.
Det Sgt Blackman said: "The man had said words to the affect of 'Don't be silly, I have a knife'.
"He produced a Stanley-type knife at which point the shop owner had stopped wrestling with him."
The robber got about £40 and ran out of the shop. Mr Corken was left shaken but unhurt by the raid.
The robbery happened at about 3pm yesterday just as youngsters were leaving the nearby St Mary's Church of England Primary School.
Police today appealed for any witnesses to the robbery or anyone who saw the car in the area to get in touch.
Anyone with information should contact Clacton police on 01255 221312 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
A man was arrested in connection with the incident. He was later released on police bail pending further inquiries.
