Oxford United keeper Richard Knight was set to play for Colchester United reserves today as part of a deal that could take Andy Woodman the other way.
U's boss Steve Whitton said: "I've told Oxford manager Ian Atkins that I am prepared to take Knight on loan to have a look at him only if Oxford are prepared to sign Woodman permanently."
Knight, a 23-year-old former Derby County keeper, enjoyed loan spells with Carlisle, Birmingham, Hull City and Macclesfield before joining Oxford on a free transfer in March 2000.
He was due at Layer Road this afternoon for the U's Avon Insurance League clash with Barnet.
Atkins has already made no secret of the fact he has to unload one of his two keepers to take Woodman to the Kassam Stadium on a permanent basis.
Voted Oxford's player-of-the-year last season, former England Youth international Knight will clearly be looking for first-team football if the U's were to sign him.
On that score he would surely find himself in the same boat as Woodman, who lost his place to Simon Brown in early January.
Brown, this week, signed a new two-year deal to keep him at Layer Road until 2004.
Gavin Johnson could make his comeback in the second string clash with Barnet, having missed the last month with a hip injury.
