Leigh police station could be turned into a "one stop shop" after a new £2m super-station is built, if town councillors get their way.
Terry Gray, ward councillor for Marine Estate, saw his proposal of the council offices being moved into the 100-year old police station accepted by the full council.
A working party will be set up by the finance and general purpose committee to discuss the feasibility of the council taking over the police station when the police move out to the new station which will cover Southend West.
Mr Gray said: "Naturally we would like the police to remain in Leigh, but we cannot influence their decision.
"If the building in Elm Road becomes vacant I suggest that we move into the police station giving the current council offices back to Southend Council."
