When it comes to maths, Colchester schoolchildren and their teachers got the best man for the job.
Johnny Ball, the TV writer and presenter who has made maths and science fun, took Old Heath Community Primary School and the town's Mercury Theatre by storm yesterday with his hands-on style of "teaching".
Johnny, famous to at least two generations thanks to television's Playschool, Think of a Number and Johnny Ball Reveals All, showed how maths and science owe it all to the Egyptians, Archimedes, John Dalton and Michael Faraday by simple experiments which captivated his audiences.
He had been invited to Colchester to help Old Heath celebrate its maths week and to give the 22nd Colchester Lecture, an annual event to promote engineering and science.
