Southend United manager Rob Newman, who also played himself in attack, praised Blues' gutsy display in their 1-0 win at Lincoln City on Saturday.

"We were down to the bare bones for bodies at Lincoln, but I couldn't fault any of the lads at Sincil Bank -- they were all first class," he said.

"I was forced to bring players into the side who haven't featured for a while -- like David McSweeney and Leon Johnson -- and they put in outstanding performances.

"Daniel Gay was also given a go in goal and I don't think he put a foot wrong all afternoon.

"The whole team excelled and I felt we were particularly solid at the back, following last Tuesday's sloppy defensive display during the 2-1 defeat at Leyton Orient.

"And the players who have come in and done such a good job have now given me food for thought for the rest of the season.

"I want healthy competition at Roots Hall and the players who missed out at Lincoln will have a hard task forcing their way back into the side now."
