Fines and costs totalling over £1,000 were imposed on a couple who stole two bottles of engine oil from a Dunmow supermarket.

Peter Barlow, 52, and his wife Lou Barlow, 54, of Stortford Road, Little Canfield, were sentenced at Chelmsford Crown court on Friday after a jury convicted them of theft.

Each was fined £250 and the couple were ordered to pay £14.98 compensation to Tesco and £652 prosecution costs.

Laureen Fleischman, prosecuting, said the incident happened at Tesco store, Dunmow, on September 8.

A member of staff saw Peter Barlow transfer two bottles of engine oil from the store's basket into his wife's shoulder bag. The couple then left the store without paying for the oil. When stopped outside they pushed past two employees, got into their car and drove off.

Geoffrey Jones, mitigating, said the Barlows had been "embarrassed and humiliated" by their court appearance.
