A laser therapist promoted No Smoking Day by testing the carbon monoxide levels of smokers in Braintree.
John Rawnsley, of the Braintree Therapy Centre, tested about 30 smokers in George Yard, on No Smoking Day on Wednesday.
The object of the breath test was to show smokers how much carbon monoxide is inhaled from cigarettes.
Mr Rawnsley said: "As a deadly gas, carbon monoxide is something that is usually associated with traffic fumes and heating boilers. But it is just one of 4,000 other chemicals that are inhaled by smokers."
