An investigation was under way today after an empty building on the old James Hornsby School site in Laindon High Road was set alight yesterday.
The blaze was contained within the lobby on the ground floor of the two-storey block, which was well alight and heavily smoke-logged.
The building suffered severe smoke damage to several rooms, with the walls and ceilings blackened, but no-one was injured.
A spokesman for Basildon fire said: "We are treating this incident as suspicious."
