A leading figure in music-making, research and education in north Essex has died.
Christopher Turner, former head of music at Thomas, Lord Audley School, Colchester, was 57.
Mr Turner taught for five years in Kent before becoming head of music at the Colchester school in 1976.
By 1990, he was a full-time lecturer at Colchester Institute with special responsibility for courses in school-based studies and music for people with special needs.
For many years, he was organist and choirmaster at St Andrew's Church, Fingringhoe.
He also ran several groups devoted to his other passion the recreation and performance of early music.
He also organised two conferences on this music at the Clacton site of Colchester Institute.
Mr Turner had many articles published on music and music education.
His major works include the as yet unpublished A Social History of Anglican Church Music.
