Fire crews from across south Essex were last night called into action to tackle a fire burning its way through a large hay barn at Lawness Farm, Mountnessing Road, Billericay.
When firefighters arrived they discovered 300 tonnes of hay on fire in the farm's main barn.
Before crews could tackle the blaze 100 per cent of the building and all the hay was already on fire. Back-up engines prevented the fire spreading to surrounding buildings.
Fire chiefs will investigate the cause of the blaze, but the cost of the damage is not yet known. Nobody was hurt.
