Firefighters and police were today investigating a suspected arson attack on a disused building - and are determined to catch the culprits before they strike again.
The empty office building, on the A13 between the Pitsea flyover and the Five Bells roundabout, was engulfed in flames and was severely damaged by smoke.
Two fire crews from Basildon went to the fire, near to the railway crossing, after a member of the public called and said he thought a barn was on fire.
The building was left with 75 per cent severe smoke damage after the fire, which broke out early on Saturday morning.
Martin Pullen, Basildon station officer, said: "The whole building had areas that were destroyed and others severely smoke and heat damaged. Part of the roof also collapsed.
"We are treating the fire as suspicious and are currently carrying out an investigation."
Although there were no human casualties this time, fire chiefs and police feel there could be in any similar attacks in the future.
Anyone who may have any information about the fire is asked to call Basildon police on 01268 532212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
