An elderly man from the Brightlingsea area died after his Renault Laguna car was in collision with a lorry.
His woman passenger was today "poorly" in the intensive care unit at Colchester General Hospital.
A Toyota Corolla travelling behind the Renault was also in collision with the lorry, but the occupants, and the lorry driver escaped with minor injuries.
The accident happened on the B1029 Brightlingsea Road at the border of Brightlingsea with Thorrington at about 3.30pm on Friday March 8.
The road was closed for more than four hours, but tailbacks which built up as far as Alresford took even longer to clear.
