Investigators were today probing the cause of a three-vehicle pile-up in which a motorist died after his car was in a collision with a lorry.
The crash scene
The smash blocked the only route into and out of Brightlingsea for more than four hours, but tailbacks which built up as far as Alresford took even longer to clear.
It took firefighters almost an hour to free the driver, a 64-year-old Brightlingsea man, from the "extensively badly damaged" Renault Laguna. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police were expected to release his identity later today.
The accident happened on the B1029 Brightlingsea Road at the border of Brightlingsea with Thorrington at about 3.30pm on Friday.
Police wanted to hear from witnesses, particularly the driver of a blue minibus who may have seen the collision. They are asked to contact Insp Simon Morgan on 01206 762512.
