The owners of Stansted Airport have been heralded by Business in the Environment (BiE) as the best example of environmental management by a transport company.
BAA also came third overall out of 83 FTSE 100 companies that participated in BiE's survey for it annual index, which tracks how companies make environmental issues an integral part of business strategy, management and performance.
BAA managed to achieve a 99 per cent success rate managing environmental impact and setting specific targets to reduce them.
Mike Hodgkinson, BAA Chief Executive, was delighted to see the company's performance significantly improve during the last year.
He said: "We recognise the significant sustainability challenges faced by our industry, and we make it a priority to report fully and openly to all our stakeholders on our environmental processes."
