Southend United boss Rob Newman launched a scathing attack on three of his star players ahead of tomorrow's Roots Hall clash with high-flying Rochdale.

The Shrimpers chief lashed out at goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan, defender Leon Cort and midfielder Kevin Maher, who have all refused to sign new contracts with the Third Division club.

"All I can say is that I am very disappointed," said Newman. "Southend United have offered these three players good contracts. In fact we have tabled the best deals we could afford.

"Their decision to refuse the terms indicates that they are not committed to us.

"And there won't be any more money on offer -- we won't be held to ransom. The club has done everything it can to keep Darryl, Leon and Kevin at Roots Hall and they should expect to get some stick from the fans!"

However, there was some good news with young shot-stopper Daniel Gay and midfielder Stuart Thurgood both agreeing one-year deals. Experienced left-back Damon Searle is also expected to sign early next week.

But returning to 25-year-old Maher's snub, Newman said: "Kevin has turned us down because he believes another club is waiting to offer him ridiculous money.

"But we have made him the best offer we can and we can't go any higher."

Maher is wanted by Leyton Orient while Brighton target Flahavan, 24, and Cort, 22, have both told Newman they want to keep their options open.
