An anti-vandalism campaign has been backed by police but several hundred pounds are needed to run it.
The initiative would offer cash rewards to informants who help solve crimes in the Harwich and Dovercourt area.
Sgt Peter Wood, of Harwich police, said they were looking for innovative ways of reducing criminal damage.
He said: "Vandalism is a concern. One of the ways in which we can attune the public is to ask for their assistance in making statements to the police.
"We are organising a scheme by which anybody who provides us with a statement will be rewarded."
"We need a fund with several hundred pounds for the rewards. I know it works because it's been successful in other areas."
He said the police could not operate the financial side of the scheme and needed someone to manage funds.
Harwich deputy mayor Dave McLeod met with police after calling for something to be done about criminal damage in the town.
